The Black Country region got its name due to its link with industry and coal, but the origins of the name is disputed. Many people say the Black Country got its name because of the soot and fumes from factories that hung in the air and used to turn many things black, others say that the origin of the name is due to the coal deposits found near the surface of the land, which makes the soil in the area appear black.

Dudley can easily be reached by motorway and rail links, and is also relatively close to Birmingham airport.
